My Blog Diet

I haven't been posting for a while, and thought I'd explain. I am writing a book which I'd really like to finish during this life time. My New Year's resolution was something like this--"more book, less blog."

I blog here but also at Talking Philosophy. I decided I couldn't keep doing both, so chose the blog with the bigger readership. But having my own blog is a lot of fun, and I may decided to "come home" sooner or later.

My blog diet has been wonderfully effective and I'm happy to report I'm making good progress with the book. I'm hoping some day soon it will have a definite title. The working title is "The Wonder of Animals," but my son informs me that sounds like a Walt Disney movie. I can't decide if that's good or bad.

Sorry - I took you off my blogroll. I'm in a bit of a clean-up mood, and as you've said you're not going to be posting here any time soon...

I've also deleted "Talking Philosophy" from my blogroll. We don't seem to get along all that well, and I have neither the time nor the inclination to participate in many of the discussions. So don't look for me there, again. (The Magistrate wasn't just the final straw; being generally asked to question my love of the United States of America finally did it.)

Good luck on the book; I'll drop by from time to time to see if there's any updating! I finally got a copy of "The Weight of Things", a little while ago, and I'm saving it for my cross-country motorcycle trip in May. I am looking forward to some good reading! :-)

Take care, and thanks for your comments over on TP.

Good luck on your book. I vote with your son: The Wonder of Animals Sounds like a Walt Disney movie. How about Everything You Never Wanted to Learn About Animals, But Were Too Polite to Ask?

CA, Sorry to see you go, but I understand. If I were a TP reader there are various things I'd find frustrating. I'll leave that statement veiled and mysterious. Thanks much for buying my book. I hope you enjoy it...I'm flattered to think it will be read on a cool motorcycle trip. Check back here. I can only blog in one place, and it might be here again before long. Frankly, I miss my picture of Denali.

Amos, Well, I suppose you're right, but I like the word "wonder." Aristotle said philosophy begins in wonder (not Walt Disney!). I like the way "wonder" suggests questioning and bewilderment rather than dogma. But yes, "The Wonder of Animals" sounds like a boo about Bambi. I do have lots of other bad titles up my sleeve...hopefully a good one will occur to me.

Sorry to be so sophomoric, as my father used to say. How about More Than Meat: Our Sentient Fellow Beings? Or More Than Meat: The Wonder of Our Sentient Fellows?

I like an evocative title that doesn't really reveal too much about what the book claims A nice book title I came across recently--"The 10th Parallel". What the hell is it about? It attracts my interest. Titles are all poetry, and I think I'm not that great a poet, hence my problem. I'll put your suggestion in my list of possibilities, which is getting longer all the time.

I wasn't sure how academic your book is. Academic titles can't be too poetic. If it's not academic, one good move in titles is to emphasize one striking aspect: for example, Wittgenstein's Poker. So if there's a chapter or even a paragraph about how lions (lions sell more than squirrels do.) reason, you could call it something like The Strategic Lion. You get the idea.

Not too academic-it's supposed to appeal to the general reader. Yeah, I need that kind of a vivid thing. The Strategic Lion is in the right ballpark. That gets me thinking....

No title can compare with the recent small volume of philosophy called *BullShit.* Actually, he could have left out the somewhat Bambi aspect of that title. Four letters is enough.
