My Blog Tour

[Please take the talent show poll!]

Around the time my book was published, I found myself often saying things like "I wonder when Blackwell's going to arrange my European book tour?" This was a joke, of course. People who write philosophy books don't get to fly around to glamorous destinations.

(I'm hitting myself for not being the author of that new title Plato and a Platypus Walked into a Bar. Why didn't I think of that? I bet those guys are going on a European book tour!)

The New York Times had a story last weekend that made me feel good. It turns out hardly anybody gets to go on a book tour these days, but authors are being sent on "blog tours." Ahem. It's not exactly Paris. But ok...it's something.

To finally get to the point--I'm profiled today on Normblog. Blog tour? Not exactly, but it was fun.

Jean,

We're writing you from the French Riviera. (Just a moment . . . Garcon! Another muscadet, s'il vous plait!) We just wanted to tell you that we're sure a blog tour is very interesting in its own way. (Oops, gotta run! Mimi and Giselle are returning. Over here, girls!)

Gotta be quick. I'm in the middle of an exciting discussion with Richard Dawkins over on his website and those folks over at Time.com are asking some great questions about the meaning of life. About those dreary cafes...yeah, they really do smoke too much in France. Thanks for dropping a comment!

Truth to tell, we were honored to be mentioned on your blog. We've read some of your stuff and suspect you are the real thing. Tom and I, on the other hand, are superannuated philosophy students who never got over our adoloscent fascination with the Big Questions.

BTW, here's a book that's coming out soon to keep on your radar: "The Little Book of Atheist Spirituality" by Andre Comtes-Sponville, a good French smoker.

Wow, that sounds like a definite hit. (And a definite book tour...)

But jealousy aside, let's hear it for readable philosophy. There's nothing that says reading philosophy has to be miserable.

All the best to you, Jean
