I totally forgot to watch it on TV... Caught the last 15 minutes of it with Jon talking about how we accomplish things, like driving in traffic.
I'm not sure if that analogy is a fair one. Most people when faced with going about their everyday life can do so with Republicans and Democrat labels aside. But when governing, its much harder to not think about the wider ranging implications. Its much easier to stall out making important decisions, than minor ones.
I thought it was a lot of fun. Actually thought the Holland Tunnel point was good. "You go, then I go"--as crazy as people are, they can manage to be cooperative and fair when necessary. So why pick the rare crazy, selfish person as your pundit or reporter? I think that was the main message of the whole thing--we should listen to reasonable people, not the nuts who are constantly in the limelight.
Right, On an everyday level it works fine, but Jon wanted to extend that attitude to Government. Why can't the Dems and Reps not just make compromises like we do when trying to squeeze into the tunnel?
I heard him make the same analogy on the daily show a while back, and didn't think it was very good when I heard it there.
If government was an individual game trying to get to the other side of the tunnel, then sure, but it isn't. Its a game where people's basic beliefs are challenged, and then are asked to make decisions that contradict those beliefs, and the beliefs of their constituents.
Yeah, but that was the point. Ozzy kept interrupting because he was one of the bad guys who doesn't understand "you go then I go." It was too bad, because Mr. Stephens sounded so wonderful, but he seemed happy to be part of the show.
Wayne, I heard it on the Daily Show back then too. I don't remember what he was saying back then, but I think the point at the rally wasn't about dems and reps compromising. In fact, he's chided Obama for being too timid, not loyal enough to his ideals. The point was just about the media, and how the reasonable people (who understand "you go, then I go") are excluded. The rare asshole is for some reason turned into a media star, which gives everyone a skewed view of what the total population is like. Most of us are actually "you go, then I go" types. Maybe you turned it on after his big montage of screaming heads (Beck, Olbermann, etc). I think he was making a point about them, not about how government should function.
OIC. Yeah, the media could definitely learn a thing from tunnel traffic. Bah... I guess that's what happens when I forget about the rally and see the last 14 minutes of it.

ReplyDeleteHaving Cat Stephens interrupted by Ozzy was blasphemy. Where was the Your turn then My turn attitude when it was needed.
